Etymology

The verb comes from Latin in- plus bracae, meaning breeches or trousers, with the infinitive suffix -are. The prefix in- became îm- before the labial b, a regular sound shift in Romanian. So the word originally meant something like putting someone into their leg wear, and it later widened to cover dressing in clothes generally.
