Etymology
Arat descends from Latin aratus, the past participle of arare, to plow. Romanian kept this Latin verb almost unchanged as a ara, and arat is simply its participle, used both to build compound past tenses and as a plain adjective for tilled land. This is core inherited vocabulary, not a later borrowing.
