Etymology

Romanian borrowed țigară from Turkish sigara during the long period of Ottoman influence in the region. The Turkish word itself traces back through French cigare to Spanish cigarro. The deeper origin is debated: some link it to the Spanish word for cicada, cigarra, because a rolled cigar was thought to resemble the insect's body, while others point to a Mayan word for smoking. Because the word is a relatively late loan rather than inherited vocabulary, it has no Indo-European root.
