Etymology
Romanian acid entered the language in the modern era through French acide and Latin acidus, both meaning sour or tart. Latin acidus comes from the verb acere, to be sour, built on a root meaning sharp or pointed. The same root produced Latin acer, sharp or keen, and acutus, sharp or acute, and the word spread across European languages as chemistry terminology standardized in the 18th and 19th centuries.
