Romanian borrowed "verdict" from French "verdict" in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of legal and administrative vocabulary that entered the language during its modernization. The French word itself descends from Old French "verdit", built from Latin "vere dictum", literally "truly said". The Latin phrase named the sworn statement of a jury.
