Etymology

Romanian borrowed sindicat from French syndicat in the nineteenth century, as the country modernized its legal and labor vocabulary. The French word traces back to Latin syndicus and Greek syndikos, meaning someone who assists or represents in a legal matter. The Greek term combines syn- (together) with dike (justice, right), so the original sense was close to a joint legal representative rather than a workers' organization.
