Etymology

Opus is the past participle of the Romanian verb a opune, meaning to oppose or set against. It descends from Latin oppōnere (ob-, against, plus pōnere, to put), the same base verb that gives pune (to put) its participle pus. As an adjective it keeps the literal sense of something placed against something else, which is why it means opposite. Romanian separately borrowed opus straight from Latin as an unrelated noun for an artistic or musical work; the two words look alike but are stressed differently and have distinct histories.
