Etymology
Afurisit is the past participle of a afurisi, meaning to curse or to excommunicate. The verb came into Romanian from Byzantine Greek aphorizein, a term the Orthodox Church used for formally casting someone out of the community. Church Slavonic served as the channel through which this ecclesiastical vocabulary reached Romanian. Over time the strict religious sense faded, and the word settled into everyday speech as a general curse or a term of exasperated affection.
