Etymology
Rugăciune comes from the verb a ruga, meaning to ask or to beg, which descends from Latin rogare. The noun-forming suffix -ciune, cognate with the Latin -tio/-tionem that gives English words ending in -tion, turns the act of asking into the formal act of prayer. So rugăciune literally names the act of asking, directed at God.
