Etymology

Romanian borrowed "ambasador" from French "ambassadeur", part of a wave of French-derived vocabulary that entered Romanian in the 19th century during its modernization. French took the word from Old Italian "ambasciatore", which traces back to Medieval Latin "ambactiator", built on "ambactus", a Gaulish loanword meaning servant or vassal sent on a mission. The deeper root is debated among historical linguists, so no single Proto-Indo-European form is agreed upon.
