Etymology

Combustibil entered Romanian from French combustible in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of Romance vocabulary that reshaped the modern Romanian lexicon. The French word traces to Latin combustibilis, an adjective built on combustus, the past participle of comburere, meaning to burn up completely. That verb itself is com- (together, intensive) plus urere, the basic Latin verb for burning.
