Etymology
Amelie entered Romanian medical vocabulary through French amélie, a term built from Greek a- (privative, "without") plus melos ("limb") and an abstract-noun ending. It names a rare birth defect in which a limb fails to develop at all. Romanian, like most of its scientific vocabulary, took the word from French medical writing rather than straight from Greek. The same pattern shows up in anemie, where the same privative prefix attaches to haima ("blood") instead of melos.
