Etymology

Ruinat is the past participle of the verb a ruina, "to ruin," which Romanian took from French ruiner. That verb in turn comes from Latin ruina, "a collapse, a fall," a noun built on the verb ruere, "to rush down, to collapse." The word entered Romanian in the 19th century, part of a wave of French and Latin borrowings that reshaped the modern vocabulary.
