Far entered Romanian through French phare. That word traces back to Latin pharus, itself borrowed from Greek Pharos, the name of the island in the harbor of Alexandria famous for its ancient lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. Romanian kept the original sense of lighthouse and later extended it to cover the headlight of a vehicle, since both send a directed beam of light into the distance.
