Etymology
Romanian borrowed atmosferă from French atmosphère in the 19th century, during the period when Romanian scholars reshaped the language's vocabulary along French and Latin lines. French atmosphère was itself coined in Neo-Latin as atmosphaera, built from two Greek words: atmos, meaning vapor or steam, and sphaira, meaning ball or sphere. The word entered Romanian as part of scientific and educated vocabulary rather than through everyday speech.
