Etymology

Bătrân descends from Latin veteranus, meaning a veteran soldier or, more broadly, someone old and experienced. Over centuries of sound change, the initial v became b, the e became ă, and the ending -anus became -ân. The word kept the general sense of age but lost its military meaning.
