Etymology
Bătrână is the feminine form of bătrân, old. Romanian etymological dictionaries trace bătrân back to the Latin word veteranus, meaning veteran or old soldier. Over centuries the Latin form went through sound changes typical of Romanian, including metathesis of consonants, to reach bătrân. The word kept its general sense of old age while losing the military meaning of the Latin original.
