Etymology
Baterie entered Romanian from French batterie, a noun built on the verb battre, to beat or strike. In French the word first named a row of guns fired in sequence, then any grouped set of like devices, which is how it came to mean an electric battery, a set of drums, or a row of taps. Romanian borrowed the word wholesale in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French vocabulary, rather than building it from native Latin material.
