Etymology
Biserică comes from Latin basilica, a term for a large public hall that early Christians adopted for church buildings. Most Romance languages kept a form of Latin ecclesia for 'church' (French église, Italian chiesa, Spanish iglesia), but Romanian took the basilica route instead. Sound changes in spoken Latin turned basilica into biserică over centuries.
