Etymology

Boală entered Romanian from a South Slavic source related to the root seen in Old Church Slavonic bolěti, "to hurt, to be sick." Romanian absorbed a large layer of Slavic vocabulary through centuries of contact with neighboring Slavic-speaking populations, and words for illness and the body were part of that exchange. The Romanian feminine noun suffix -ă was added to the borrowed root to fit native declension patterns.
