Etymology
Pahar entered Romanian through Slavic contact, from a form close to Old Church Slavonic and Bulgarian pehar or Serbian pehar, meaning cup or goblet. That Slavic word is itself thought to derive from an Old High German term related to modern German Becher (cup, mug), which spread widely across Central and Eastern Europe through medieval trade. The same root gave Hungarian pohár. Romanian kept the word for the everyday drinking glass, while its old derivative paharnic named a court official who served wine to a prince.
