Etymology

Romanian borrowed "buget" from French "budget" in the 19th century, during the wave of modernization that brought many administrative and financial terms into the language. French itself took the word from English "budget", which traces to Old French "bougette", a small leather bag, from "bouge" (bag), from Latin "bulga". The sense shifted from a physical pouch holding money to the abstract financial plan it now names.
