Etymology
Burlac entered Romanian from Ukrainian burlak, a word for an itinerant laborer or vagrant, especially the barge haulers of the Dnieper and Volga known in Russian as burlaki. In the Romanian lands, contact with Ukrainian speakers in Moldavia shifted the sense from wandering laborer to a man without a household of his own, and from there to unmarried man. The word kept the everyday, slightly folksy tone of its origin rather than becoming a formal legal term.
