Etymology

Câștigător is built from the verb a câștiga, "to win" or "to earn," plus the agent suffix -tor. The verb itself has an unusual past: Romanian took it from a Slavic source, which had earlier borrowed the Latin verb castigare, "to punish, to correct." In Slavic usage the meaning drifted toward "to obtain, to gain," and Romanian inherited that shifted sense as "to win or earn." So câștigător literally means "the one who wins or earns."
