Etymology

Dimineața is the adverbial use of dimineață, the Romanian noun for morning. The noun goes back to Vulgar Latin de mane, meaning in the morning, joined with the abstract-noun suffix -eață found in tinerețe, youth, and bătrânețe, old age. The same Latin phrase de mane also gave rise to the word for tomorrow in other Romance languages, since telling someone something de mane came to mean the next day. Romanian split the two senses: dimineață kept the morning meaning, while a related form gave mâine, tomorrow.
