Etymology

Navetă entered Romanian from French navette, which originally meant a weaving shuttle and, by extension, any back-and-forth trip. French navette itself comes from Latin navicula, a diminutive of navis, meaning ship. The shape of a weaving shuttle, like a small boat gliding across the loom, gave the word its later sense of repeated to-and-fro travel, including the daily commute and the space shuttle.
