Etymology
Marinar entered Romanian in the 19th century as the language absorbed Western vocabulary, most likely through French marinier or Italian marinaio. Both trace back to Latin marinus, meaning of the sea, itself built on mare, sea. Romanian kept the same core and used a native agentive suffix to mark the person who does the work.
