Etymology
Romanian "mare" comes from Latin "mas, maris", which originally meant "male". In spoken Latin the word broadened from "male" to "grown, mature, large", and Romanian kept that later sense while other Romance languages went a different route: French "grand" and Italian "grande" descend from Latin "grandis" instead. This makes "mare" one of the more distinctive Latin survivals in Romanian vocabulary.
