Etymology

Ochi descends from Latin oculus, meaning eye. Regular sound changes in spoken Latin dropped the intervocalic consonant cluster and turned the -cl- into the palatal sound written chi in Romanian. The same Latin root gave French œil, Italian occhio, and Spanish ojo. English eye is unrelated in form but shares a common Indo-European ancestor further back.
