Etymology

Romanian "ca" descends from Latin "quam", the word used in Latin comparative constructions such as "maior quam" (bigger than). Over time it lost its final consonant and narrowed to the single syllable "ca", keeping its core job of linking two compared terms. It now covers both similarity ("as, like") and comparison ("than"), and combines with other particles to form "ca să" (in order to) and "ca și cum" (as if).
