Etymology

Romanian "cal" descends from Latin "caballus", a word for a workhorse or pack horse, as opposed to the more formal classical Latin "equus". The same Latin root spread across the Romance languages and became the ordinary word for horse in most of them. Latin "caballus" itself is not a native Indo-European formation; its ultimate origin is disputed, so no secure PIE root can be given.
