The word comes from French "calculateur", itself built on Latin "calculare" (to calculate), from "calculus" (small stone, pebble used for counting). Romanian borrowed it in the 19th and 20th centuries as part of a wave of French-based technical vocabulary. Its meaning shifted over the 20th century from "one who calculates" to "calculating machine" and finally, with the arrival of personal computers, to "computer" itself, which is now its dominant everyday sense in Romanian.
