Etymology
Comite comes from Latin committere, a compound of com- (together) and mittere (to send). The Latin verb already carried the sense of setting something in motion or entrusting an act, which narrowed over time to committing a wrongdoing. Romanian inherited the form from Latin and reinforced it through French commettre, giving the modern verb a somewhat formal, legal-sounding tone.
