Etymology
Certificat entered Romanian from French certificat in the nineteenth century, as Romanian institutions modernized along French administrative models. The French word goes back to Medieval Latin certificatum, the past participle of certificare, itself built from certus (certain, sure) and facere (to make). So the word literally means something like 'made certain'.
