Etymology
Frână comes from Latin frenum, meaning bridle or bit, the piece of gear used to control a horse. Romanian carried the sense of restraining and slowing forward, over time, from horses to wheeled vehicles and machinery in general. The same Latin root also gave Romanian frâu, meaning rein, so the two words are close relatives with a shared origin.
