Etymology

Mărturisit is the past participle of a mărturisi, a verb built on the noun mărturie, meaning testimony or witness account. Mărturie itself traces back to martor, witness, which came into Romanian from Latin martyr, itself borrowed from Greek. The verb-forming suffix -isi turned the noun mărturie into a verb, and the participial ending -t then gave mărturisit, literally something like testified or witnessed to, which settled into the sense of confessed.
