Etymology
Romanian borrowed "ciorap" from Ottoman Turkish "çorap" during centuries of Ottoman political and cultural contact with the Romanian lands. The Turkish word itself came from Persian "jūrāb", meaning sock or foot covering. The same Turkish word spread into several Balkan languages during the same period, which is why the form looks so similar across the region. It is a loanword, not a native Latin-derived term, so it has no Indo-European root of its own.
