Etymology

Romanian borrowed "club" from French "club", which took it directly from English "club". The English word originally meant a heavy stick or cudgel, and by the 17th century it had come to mean a group of men who banded together, much like a bundle of sticks joined into one. Romanian adopted the word in its modern social sense during the 19th and 20th centuries, along with many other French-mediated terms for urban institutions.
