Romanian borrowed a iubi from Old Church Slavonic ljubiti in the medieval period, alongside the older Latin-derived vocabulary of the language. The Slavic root goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root that also gave English "love" through Germanic. The ending -o is a native Romanian vocative marker, used to call out directly to a feminine noun.
