Etymology
Iubită is the feminine form of iubit, the past participle of the verb a iubi, meaning to love. A iubi comes from Old Slavic ljubiti, borrowed into Romanian during centuries of close contact with Slavic-speaking neighbors. The participle came to double as a noun, so iubită means both loved and the loved woman, that is, girlfriend.
