Etymology
Romanian borrowed "articol" from French "article" (with reinforcement from Latin "articulus") during the 18th and 19th centuries, when the language was actively replacing Slavic and Greek administrative terms with Western Romance ones. The Latin source, "articulus", is a diminutive of "artus", meaning joint or limb. The underlying sense of a small connecting part later extended to a distinct section of a text or law, and then to a piece of writing or a unit of merchandise.
