Etymology
Pereche comes from Vulgar Latin paricula, a diminutive of par, meaning equal or matched pair. Romanian applied its regular sound changes to this Latin form and arrived at pereche. The same Latin base gave Spanish pareja and French pareil, though each language reshaped the diminutive in its own way. The core sense, two things that match or belong together, has stayed stable across all of them.
