Etymology
Nevastă comes from a Slavic word for bride, close to Old Church Slavonic and Russian nevesta. The Slavic word itself is usually traced to a negative prefix meaning not joined to a root meaning to know, so it originally described a bride as the woman not yet known to her husband's family. Romanian borrowed the word during centuries of close contact with Slavic-speaking neighbors, and it later shifted from bride to the broader everyday sense of wife.
