Etymology
Romanian borrowed "plajă" from French "plage" in the 19th century, part of a wave of French loanwords that reshaped Romanian vocabulary. French "plage" traces back through Old Provençal "plaja" to Vulgar Latin "plagia", from Latin "plaga", meaning a tract or region of land. The word is unrelated to the native Romanian word for shore, "țărm", which comes from Slavic.
