Etymology

Compara entered Romanian as a learned borrowing from French comparer, itself from Latin comparare, during the nineteenth-century push to re-Latinize the language. Latin comparare was built from com- (together) and parare (to prepare, arrange), a verb tied to par (equal). The original sense was to place things side by side as equals in order to judge them.
