Etymology
Aromă entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French and Latin borrowings that modernized the vocabulary. It traces back to Greek árōma, meaning spice or seasoning, which passed into Latin and then into French arôme before reaching Romanian. The word replaced or sat alongside older, more general terms for smell.
