Etymology
Cumpăr is the first-person singular present of a cumpăra, from Latin comparare. Comparare originally meant to pair up or match, built from com- (together) and parare (to prepare, procure), and in Vulgar Latin it shifted to mean acquiring goods by payment. Romanian kept that everyday sense, as did other Romance languages, so cumpăra became the ordinary verb for buying rather than a rare or formal one.
