Etymology

Romanian borrowed "gaz" directly from French "gaz" in the 19th century, during the period when Romanian vocabulary was heavily reshaped by French loanwords. French "gaz" itself is a scientific coinage from the 1600s, invented by the chemist Jan Baptist van Helmont, likely inspired by the Greek word "khaos" (chaos, void). It is not an inherited word, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root. In older Romanian usage it also came to mean kerosene, the fuel burned in oil lamps.
