Cunoștință comes from the Romanian verb a cunoaște, to know, itself descended from Latin cognoscere. Romanian attaches the abstract-noun suffix -ință to verb stems to name the state or result of an action, so cunoștință names the state of knowing: a piece of knowledge, or, extended to people, someone you know. The consciousness sense, as in a-și pierde cunoștința, to lose consciousness, grew from the same core idea of active awareness.
