Etymology
Divizie entered Romanian in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French and Latin vocabulary that modernized the language. It comes from French division, itself from Latin divisio, the noun form of dividere, to divide. Romanian ended up with two related words from this stem: divizie, for a distinct unit such as an army corps or a company department, and diviziune, for the abstract act of splitting something apart.
